31 Castlegate![]() 31 Castlegate 31 Castlegate is open daily serving a tempting and varied range of lunch and snacks in the main 19th Century dining room. In the evening No' 31 is transformed into an elegant candlelit restaurant serving predominantly British à-la-carte dishes, which are complemented by an extensive range of new and old wines. There is often an early bird menu, check the blackboards outside for latest specials. 31 Castlegate is located right next to the historic Clifford's Tower in the York Castle Area and also close to the Coppergate Shopping area and Viking Museum. There is a car park next to Cliffords' Tower.
Comments My fiance and I chose to hold our engagement party for 16 people at 31 Castlegate having visited a few times. We were very well looked after, and every single person commented on how wonderful tasting and beautifully presented the food was. My favourite restaurant in York, I can't recommend it highly enough. I cannot recommend this highly enough! I went to York with my boyfriend as part of his present for his 21st Birthday, I was looking for a nice restaurant for the evening meal but could not afford the prices in other places. Luckily I stumbled across 31 Castlegate in the Michelin food guide and decided to investigate. I booked a table and it was perfect- in the eve it was low lit with candles and very welcoming staff. We chose the pre-set three course meal (although you could opt for a la carte) for only THIRTEEN pounds (earlybird 6-9pm although we stayed till 10). The food was fantastic, high quality with interesting tastes, the duck is beautifully cooked and I recommend the sticky toffee pudding too. We had a bottle of wine too and the bill was under 40 quid, although I thought it was worth far more than this. I will definitely be returning next time I go to York! First visit to restaurant on 21/12/07 - expected it to be busy with great atmosphere it being Friday before Christmas, but we were the only diners!!!, and it made the evening quite uncomfortable. Food and service were great - couldn't fault either. Didn't like artificial flower on table (one of my pet hates) or toilet with no toilet paper (shoddy!). Dec 2007 / 3 Stars
Had a wonderful meal there this weekend, and excellent value too. The owner/chef is someone who really knows how to cook. We used our Hi-Life Card (on a Friday evening - v unusual!) and it was accepted graciously. There is also a quite small but very well chosen wine list at great prices. One of the best meals my husband and I have ever eaten. The wine list is good and not over priced. The service is attentive without being all over you. We had a great evening partially spoiled by the young teenagers screeching in the Coppergate Centre - that needs attending to. Nov 2007 / 5 Stars - Recommended

Excellent restaurant, with first-class food and wonderful staff. I now have been several times, and though it is sometimes still a bit too quiet, the waiter that usually is present deals with it well and it really doesn't feel at all awkward - and either way the food and service is just too good to be spoilt by a lack of bodies. Our bill never exceeds £50, and that's for the menu a la carte and a nice bottle of wine. The music's always great too. Just brilliant!
