This Yuletide, York is delighted to bring its first German Christmas Market to the city. The Christkindlesmarkt is an important part of Advent celebrations in Germany and traditionally sells arts and crafts, along with seasonal food and drink. With so many of our own Christmas customs having their foundations in German tradition. Organisers are looking forward to a feast of Christmas treats where the shoppers can stop for a Glühwein or two before delighting themselves on wursts, stollen and Lebkuchen while browsing through German crafts, gifts and Christmas decorations.

York Santa Dash

The British Heart Foundation is asking people of all ages to sign up for their first Santa dash in York to raise money for the charity’s vital work. Hosted by Radio York the dash will be opened by York pantomime legend Berwick Kaler. Anyone can take part and dress up and have fun, regardless of age or ability, from toddlers to the elderly. The Santa Dash starts at 10.30am, starting and finishing in Tower Gardens, York and will cover a distance of no longer than 1 mile. Participants can complete the course in their own time and at a comfortable pace.

Entry fee is a minimum donation of £5 for adults, which includes a free adult size Santa Suit. Children are encouraged to come in fancy dress and can enter the dash for free (under 16 year olds need to be accompanied by an adult) and take part in the fancy dress competition at the end of the dash. The Ice Factor

The Ice Factor, York’s open air ice rink, will be returning to York in November. Set in front of the famous backdrop of Clifford’s Tower. The Ice Factor is a unique Christmas attraction for young and old alike. Including a 600 sqm ice rink centred round the illuminated oak tree in the Eye of York, a viewing area as well as a rink side bar and cafe. Minster FM will also be supplying music to get the party going.

Festival of Angels

Ice sculptures line the streets, there is guaranteed snow, music, food and drink! This year the event will begin at 10am on both days and begin to pack down at 4pm. The Quarter is fully accessible, with food, drink, shopping and good cheer for all.

The Parade of Angels is on Sunday.
The Quarter is a patchwork of old medieval streets; Grape Lane, Swinegate, Back Swinegate and Little Stonegate.
