York 800
July 2012
9 July 2012 marks the 800th anniversary of local democracy in York. On the same date in 1212, King John signed a charter, which allowed the city to elect a mayor and a council for the first time to govern itself. Before that the city had been under the direct rule of the King via his Sheriff and the citizens had very little control over how their city was run.
Highlights already planned for 2012 include a major event on Charter Day in the city centre involving community choirs and other vocalists performing a new choral composition and the Mystery Plays running throughout August in the Museum Gardens.
Just 30 Fair
Active York’s annual Just 30 Fair on Saturday 23 July 2011 is set to become the biggest yet, with over 30 health & fitness organisations taking part.
This year the Just 30 Fair will take place in Rowntree Park from 10am to 4pm. The event is free and family friendly and is based around helping York adults to achieve ‘Just 30’ minutes of physical activity a day.
Sports clubs, leisure centres, fitness instructors, health organisations, dance groups, outdoor and volunteer organisations are all attending and general information about useful sources of information, websites and adult education courses will be available on the day. Beneden Healthcare, sponsors of this year’s event, will also be present.
A programme of different taster sessions will be taking place for all to enjoy free of charge. This includes the mobile climbing wall, tennis coaching, orienteering, kendo, Nordic walking and volleyball.
Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Social Inclusion, said: “The Just 30 Fair is an excellent opportunity for residents to discover new and exciting things to do in York. Physical activity can help you make new friends, learn new skills, discover new places and keep fit at the same time.”
BBC Antiques Roadshow York
Thursday 28 July 2011
Yorkshire Museum & Gardens
Recording dates for 2011 are as follows. The doors will be open from 9.30am to 4.30pm and as long as you are in the queue by 4.30pm you will see an expert.
Travel Advice: Visitors attending the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow event in York are being asked to travel by public transport if possible. The most convenient bus service is the Number 2 Green Line Park & Ride bus, based at Rawcliffe Bar, which stops immediately outside the Museum Gardens (Museum Street entrance). York’s other Park & Ride sites also drop off in the city centre, a short walk away from the Museum Gardens.
Anyone wanting to drop friends or relatives off at the event with their valuables is asked to use the Marygate entrance to Museum Gardens - not the Museum Street entrance - to avoid traffic congestion.
