Pocklington Arts Centre EventsPokey LaFarge & The South City Three Sunday 11 September 2011 Pocklington Arts Centre When Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three took the legendary Newport Folk Festival by storm, America’s big-circulation Spin magazine described the band as one of the outstanding highlights of the entire event. In no time, the band had become one of the biggest draws on the Stateside roots music circuit. On its release, their Riverboat Soul album went straight to the Number 5 slot on the influential American indie roots chart and stormed the Top Ten of the Americana UK chart, then went on to carry off the Best Americana Album category in this year’s prestigious US Independent Music Awards. Reviewing their Edinburgh festival show, influential mag, The List said: “Go, be delighted", Americana UK urged readers: “Book your seats now”. Jack White of The White Stripes recorded and produced a single for the band for his own label, Third Man Records, and in the process declared himself a fan. The band will be flown over the Atlantic twice this year to headline big summer events including Shetland Folk Festival and the massive Tonder Festival in Denmark, where they scored a huge success last year. Maverick magazine said: "There are a lot of bands heading down the lively old-timey musical route right now but LaFarge and his men raise themselves to the first rank by virtue of their winning combination of joie de vivre, chops, humour, irresistible danceability and sheer fun". The Manfreds Wednesday 21 September 2011 Pocklington Arts Centre The Manfreds, with original ‘front man’ Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits along with a mix of Jazz and Blues songs from some of their best-known albums. Paul Jones, with his unique harmonica sound, will be joined by Mike Hugg on keyboards, Tom McGuinness on lead guitar, Rob Townsend on drums, Marcus Cliffe on bass guitar and Simon Currie on saxophone/ flute. All excellent musicians who will provide a full evenings entertainment with a few ‘surprise’ renditions of their work, not only with The Manfreds, but with their individual connections. Tartuffe by Moliere Tuesday 27 September 2011 Pocklington Arts Centre A new performance version by Stewart Howson from the company that brought you Whisky Galore, The Old Curiosity Shop and Star Quality is a hilarious and outrageous classic. Tartuffe, a roguish imposter, worms his way into the orderly household of prosperous yet naive merchant Orgon. He sets out to marry the daughter, seduce the wife, imprison Orgon and get his hands on the family fortune. Cue disguises, thwarted lovers, eavesdropping and the famous ‘under the table scene’, one of the funniest comic set pieces ever written for the stage. Tartuffe is performed in a style with one foot in Commedia dell’Arte and the other in ‘Carry On’ yet with a relevance that will delight modern-day audiences. The Ian McMillan Orchestra Thursday 06 October 2011 Pocklington Arts Centre On National Poetry Day we welcome the Barnsley Bard Ian McMillan with his orchestra. A steaming, pulsing collection of songs and musically illuminated stories coming home to roost. Here be tales of family, longing, love & long histories. Told by an Orchestra, ring-mastered by Luke Carver Goss and whirlingly dervished by Barnsley poet Ian McMillan. iPod’s, first gigs, cuts and quandaries abound. A fairground of delights now out on CD - Homing In includes numbers that range from humorous to poignant to angry. Chris Farlowe & The Norman Beaker Band Sunday 16 October 2011 Pocklington Arts Centre In June 1966 Chris Farlowe took the Jagger/Richards song Out Of Time to the top of the UK singles chart. Although Chris only topped the charts once, he enjoyed a number of other hit singles including Think, Ride On Baby and the hugely popular and much-covered Handbags And Gladrags. Chris is a regular on the UK and European rock and blues circuit. His album Waiting In The Wings was released to huge critical acclaim and his band Colosseum sold out a massive tour of Europe with Chris’s voice still as fresh and powerful as ever.
