Double Concert I
Sledmere House and Church are the venues for two short concerts, both performed twice, the audience changing places either side of a picnic interval.
Philip Glass – String Quartet no. 3 Mishima
Dvorák – String Quartet no. 12 The American
The joyful string quartet that Dvorák composed while enjoying the contentment of a family holiday in Iowa – inspired by its natural beauty and weaving in the folk melodies he heard there – has become one of the most celebrated of all his works. The Carducci Quartet preface it with another celebrated American work – an adaptation of music originally composed for the film Mishima, where Philip Glass uses a string quartet to evoke the atmosphere of a wistful, carefree childhood.

16th and 17th-century victims of venomous spider bites were offered no medicinal cure or relief. Instead, local musicians would work together to find the correct melody, known as a ‘tarantella’, which could cure them of their otherwise fatal symptoms. The acclaimed recorder consort Palisander explore a victim’s ordeal, and the symptoms and side effects of a tarantula’s bite, in an entrancing programme of music and magic.
The grounds of Sledmere will be open from 5.30pm for concertgoers and there will be a further picnic opportunity during the 45 minute interval between performances when drinks will also be available.
